Want to get into cheap drag racing (as a hobby and experiment)
As title says. However I am going to keep my Focus as my DD (I may take it out just to see what it can really do). I want to keep this as a low buck hobby so I was thinking either a Fox stang or a 94-98 stang (which I would swap in a new edge motor). Whichever I can get for cheaper. I don't plan on racing it competitively, just for fun at the strip on fridays. It will also be my experimental car that I attempt to make fiberglass pieces for and do custom engine modifications (building my own IM etc.) without being too worried about really F'ing it up. I hope to get a lot of knowledge of fabrication, racing, and driving by doing this.
Before I list my questions I wanted to ask if any of you have any advice for a complete beginner at drag racing. Questions: -Where's a good place to find used racing parts for SBF's? -What do you think a stock engine, stripped out, street tire fox/94+ stang can run? -Where's a good site for info/forums about drag racing? That's all I can think of for now. I'm sure I'll have tons later though. Thanks in advance, PowerFocer |

exactly. thats why you have to pick two. if its jsut for fun. then chap and fast it fine but if its a DD then reliable has to be there.

That's why my Focus is going to stay as my DD. I've seen some fox's on CL for less than 3K so that seems doable.

Mod motors are more expensive to build 95-98 non pi headed cars are slower then a 5.0L to start with I have to admit I have entertained the thought of a 95-98 GT with PI heads with a Kenne Bell Blower set-up around the 400whp mark. Fox bodies are to the domestic world what civics are to the import crowd.

87-93 Mustang - Easy to find parts for, best stock suspension, and a strong but lightweight uni-body design.
Junkyard. (not kidding) Late 90s Explorer heads are the same GT40 heads from the 93 Cobra, just go rip them off a 5.0L explorer at the junkyard. Check around the for sale sections of mustangforums, corral, foxbodyforums, moddedmustangs, etc... As far as companies, I deal with JPC Racing and Speed Unlimited quite a bit for engine and transmission work. As far as my nitrous goes, I'm using Steve Johnson's induction solutions (incase you decide to juice it, I recommend their fogger kit). Quote:
www.yellowbullet.com ^^^Hands down the most informative site on drag racing though I will warn you, they like to rip apart newbs. There's a certain... eh... welcoming or indoctrination over there. Good luck.

racingjunk is a good place to price out or buy used drag cars and parts
I bought my old hotrod for $3000 and it was great fun bracketracing in the low 13's 20 yrs ago. If I dedicated it for drag racing, it would have gone 11's, but it was also my DD and I liked having it all original and stock, running reasonable gearing, street suspension, all steel, full interior, etc. Fast costs $$$ and breaks parts, you can learn an awful lot and have tons of fun with a "slow" 12 sec car and not be buying parts all the time. Slow cars are way more consistent for bracketracing anyhow. |
