Locked key fob in the car !!!

Yes, I did the un-doable, accomplished the impossible...locked my key fob in the car! Went to the mall and as I was getting out, did what I usually do, opened the door and pressed the lock button on the dash. When I came out the car wouldn't open, checked every pocket on me, no key fob. Searched for 1.5 hours inside...no fob. Finally got the spare key and opened the car, and there it was, inside the map pocket on the driver's side door!

I had a suspicion that it was inside because the the orange light wasn't blinking on the dash, which would indicate the car wasn't locked, but the door handles told a different story.

Going to do a controlled test this evening to see if I can recreate the problem, but wanted to get this out here to make my fellow FF's aware. My theory is that it locked and since the key was 'outside' the car proximity it allowed it to lock and when the door closed with the fob inside the door pocket, it didn't fully trigger it to unlock.

Anyone else had this happen???

I thought the car unlocks/locks when the keyfob is near it? Its that way on the prius anyway.

Was the battery low maybe?

Once at work, I drove to a different city 4 hours away... the entire time I didn't know the key fob was back at the office

I don't understand why putting your hand on the door handle didn't unlock the door.

I don't have the proximity key but I do know if 1 key is in the ignition and you lock the car with the other key it will still lock but the alarm wont honk to let you know its armed.

I learned the hard way to never lock my car until after I got out of it. The cool part about the focus is that I can just tab the door handle to lock it after I get out, it doesn't lock if the keyfob is inside.

I'm confused that this would happen to you. I Thought it would behave the same across all trims?

I got lucky when mine was a month old ... drove 500 miles to Montana to stay a few days. When I packed to drive home my keys ends up inside my suitcase.

Took me a few minutes of panicking after realizing my keyfob wasn't in my pocket to realize that's why the hatch kept sounding funny when I was closing it. I walked back to the hatch and it was unlatched still.

Be sure to replace your fob battery on a regular basis. If fob battery goes dead, you may be locked out of your car as well.

I admit to being and old geezer, but there are certain advantages to an old fashioned key, as opposed to a fob:
* No batteries to replace
* Can't let your wife drive away, after dropping you off at work with the fob still in your pocket (this can be a REAL hassle!)
* Lot's cheaper to replace a key than a fob

Of course, about 100 years ago, people with horses were probably throwing similar darts at those new fangled horseless-carriages, LOL!

Not true. I think just the SEL's. Otherwise, we have to actually hit the unlock button.

Because he doesn't have the keyless entry. He still has to press the unlock button.
