High speed corners. Lowered focus, or Mustang.
Which can take faster corners, I've always figured my lowered zx3 could own a mustang in cornering but would lose dramatically on straight aways..... So what do u think? Could a focus lowered 2.25'' in the rear and 1.5 in the front beat a mustang in how fast it could take a corner? I may be completely wrong..... thanks!

The new Mustang GT can hang with an M3. I don't think a lowered Focus is going to do that, but I could be wrong. My opinion....dollar for dollar/mod for mod, the Mustang wins any performance contest vs. the Focus. Now lets see how many people I just pizzed off. LOL

^no I hear you, you can spend about $2k in natural aspirated mods and only net about 30hp on the Focus. Do that on the Mustang though is another question...

I think if the Mustang was bone stock and the Focus was modified then the Focus would hold even thru a turn, but soon as you come out of that corner best move over....

Yes you could easily beat a mustang on a road course that does not have many long straight aways. My brother races his escort zx2 against cars like Porsche boxster, covets, and a bunch of other stuff. And he can hang with them no problem. Only thing he did to the zx2 was strip it out and put some performance tires on it. Weather people want to admit it or not, fords small cars handle better then a lot of cars do.

Its realy all about the driver not the car. A very good driver could take a POS and hang with them too.

Since the distance the focus is lowered plays a very, very small part in handling, I'll say no to this theoretical car in this super generic challenge. And what mustang are you talking about? The 09+ cars handle so much better than any of the previous generations. What kind of tires are we talking about? What is the venue: Track, Mountain Road, Autox? To many unknowns. I would, however challenge any mustang on stock suspension at an autox venue in my focus

years ago (like 2002) edmunds.com test drove the SVT focus (which i used to have bookmarked but not the article is gone) in putting the car thru the paces and all the normal performance tests, They were surprised to find that the SVT focus could go thru the slalom course (cone weaving) faster than any other car tested that year up to that point including the corvette, m3, and mustang for that year.
The focus wile a great handling car, can hang with the big buys thru just about any turn, will get killed once on the straights. If you take a car from around the early 2000's like yours you could very well beat them thru a corner, but if its a newer car, you most likely won't be able to.

So mote be it

Id say if its a short road course with out many straights, a focus should be able to play.
If you have a focus that has a nice set of coil overs and other suspension work done, it should have no problems beating a more expensive stock car. I'll assume the same tires and driver on a timed track run to keep those other variables out of it. This is just pure speculation on my part though. |
