Yup, it's basically an extra $100 (maybe a little more) if you purchase the ESP >12 months from delivery.

It's insurance, and it's hard to see the value in it until you need it. The air conditioning on my wife's VW went a few months after the warranty ended, and at only 27K miles. $1700 to fix. A warranty just gives you peace of mind that your costs are limited for a period of time. For me, $1100 was worth it to know I don't have to worry for the next 7 years.

Don't forget the amount of "New Tech" this car has. I'm not about to take that risk and have something go wrong with it that comes out to a $2500 charge...
Add to that, all oil changes, liquids, wiper baldes etc. are included so I can just take it in and get er duunnn.

On my 2001 F150 the 7 year extended warranty was around $900
After my 3/36 factory warranty expired the following went bad:
MAP sensor
3 of the COP assemblies
Power steering pump (Leaking)
Some other sensor I can't remember the name but the part cost $200
PCU (This was covered under the emissions warranty)
And a few other minor Issues I can't remember.
So in my case it was a wise financial decision to purchase it.

stupidly i got one at the time of purchase with my car before realizing i could get one much cheaper online. has anyone "returned" the factory one, to then purchase online? what's the process?

Same happened to me with the 2001 F150 after purchasing the Ford one I found out my credit union had a cheaper one. I requested a refund from Ford and they obliged. Keep in mind I did this within a week of purchasing the Ford one. Read the contract it should state how it can be refunded.

and if you do so that far down the line, I was told that the premium is much higher than what it is now. Those interested in going this way, I would recommend that you enquire further before making this decision. If you already know that you would get it, best to get it now. I'm in Canada, could be different in the US.

I have never been convinced that the extended warranty is worth it. The last two cars purchased new before the 2012 Focus (01 Focus ZX3 and 02 VW Passat) had some issues beyond their original factory warranty and were covered either by factory recalls/TSB's or were part of the extended warranty all new cars have for emission items.
Example: The 01 Focus got brand new front coil springs at 115K under the terms of a Ford TSB at no charge.

Other than a timing belt change and the usual maintenance items, not too much out of pocket expenses. 01 Focus sold at ten years /129k and I still have the 02 Passat with 87K.

If I had purchased extended warranties for the above vehicles, I would have lost the bet.

I understand that some people might desire the extra warranty but I passed on this especially since my current driving patterns (retired) should give me powertrain coverage for the full 5 years.

Also, I have the 5 speed trans and no MFT.
