I came from a Mazdaspeed 3 getting me about 25mpg highway with premium gas... now paying ~$.30 less a gallon, I haven't had a fillup over $40 yet, I usually fill up anywhere under 45DTE, the Mazda I'd do the same or a bit lower, but the DTE number on the Mazda was much closer to actual DTE, and I'd be filling up over 12 gallons... combining 2 more gallons and ~$.30 a gallon more, I was paying close to $50 a tank, even just 10 bucks less a tank for 30 more miles a tank, is great.

I made my entire commute downhill...both ways. Took me a while to figure out the landscaping behind it though.

Great idea! lol

I only drive in a direction that gives me a tail wind. The mileage has been great, but getting to where I want to go has been an issue.

(2012 SE Hatch automatic Stock)

Set my baseline today and established my Test lap for mods and repairs.

27.8 miles.

Baseline stock with 800 miles on car
70 Degrees
dry roads.
light Sunday evening traffic (6:30pm).
36.4 MPG (car computer)
Driving like a granny without hypermiling.

The girlfriend and I in the car (>300lbs combined)

Traveling clockwise headed to HEB for 87 octane gas (10% ethanol) then into town where there are speed limits of 45 -35mph and multiple stoplights but all right turns. Hills throughout, Elevation changes, downhill to town and uphill when traveling west up the boulevard (speed limit 55 & 60). Highest elevation is the Northwest tip of the lap.

I just did a test run with the Airbox cover removed, front tires at 44psi and spare+jack removed. She bumped up from 36.4 to 38.8mpg.

Today, once I passed the first 1000 km, I used for the first time the speed control and cruzed at 105 km/h. I was stunned to see the 5.8L/100 Km as average gas use. WOW ! I am sure that if I lower the speed, it would be better, but I don't want to. A 65 MPH speed is great for my commute (50 km round trip) of day to day.

In US metrics, that means 40.56 MPG at a 65 MPH speed !!

And yes, it all depends on how you drive.
My car setup : stock (no front tires inflate to 44 psi).
Temperature: 24 C degrees (shiny day)
Wind : 12 kmh

Now why is it that my 02 focus has new oil (synthetic), new sparkplugs, new air filter, properly filled air pressure (what the tire says on the side), and on top of that the car is clean. Guess what, a straight trip from gas station to gas station, 170 miles at 65-70mph and i only got 27.1mpg......... help???

You're not doing anything wrong with your car but you are comparing apples to oranges, as they say. Specifically, your '02 doesn't have the technology in the powertrain design that the newest Focus does. (If it makes you feel any better, mine doesn't either). More "engine smarts" in the newer designs like the variable cam timing, for instance.

What engine do you have? SPI or Zetec? How many miles on it? If you want a fairer comparison, compare apples to apples. Beyond that, there's not much you can do. Drive it easy, coast to red lights... move into the slower lane etc and keep it well-maintained (sounds like you do).

i forgot that i also cleaned the maf

anyways, its a zetec zx5, with about 75k. When i looked at the focus online id always seen the early models advertised as like 28-30city, 32-34 highway. So far ive yet to even acheive 28 on the highway..... When in town i like to be a little heavy on the right foot, but on long trips i tend to set the cruise and keep my foot off the pedals.
