The only description out there is that you cut the parking/headlight power wire to the main cluster of LEDs, but keep the power going to the outer rim. If done correctly, it will look like this when you aren't using your directional/brakes:

me personally id rather just get an LED tail light bulb instead but IIRC i'd have to do some minor altercations to make it all work.

Yes, at minimum you'd need a resistor, and may need to buy a flasher unit if the only thing you're replacing is the brake/turn signal bulb.

The chrome inside mine is starting to turn black, almost looks like mold, but it's the chrome that's corroding.

Luckily mine are tinted so you can't really tell, but it's starting to show up around the reverse bulb where I don't have tint.

It's only been about a year since I installed them. Functionally they are perfect.

Anyone had anything weird when installing these lights? I just installed mine, and for whatever reason the right side would not light if the turn signal was lit. It worked fine when I first installed it. I took apart, put in the stock bulb to check connection, and that didn't work. It wasn't until I started the car, then the stock bulb worked. I rehooked the led set, and now it works fine. Been working fine for two days straight now, with me driving in the rain, and on a rough road.

Side-by-side comparison
What did you use to smoke the chrome?

I'm guessing it was either Nite Shades or the Rustoleum equivalent. I also think he smoked the lens, not the inside chrome.
