thermostat housing temperature sensor

hello all, can anyone offer me some advice. Just bought a 52 reg ST. After 2 days steam coming from under the bonnet and on examination found that the temp sensor had come out of the housing. When I tried to refit it noticed that there was an adhesive of some kind in the hole. Once cleaned was unable to fit the sensor in to the hole deep enough so that the spring clip could be inserted. Ian thinking that maybe someone has glued the sensor in at some point. The sensor has a brass nut as part of the body but no threads in the hole. I've tried to go to Ford's to compare t'he sensor with a new one to see if it is correct. Also at the time, t'he oil temp gauge went off, could these be linked in some way via the ecu.
