That is bewildering. I can't imagine why anybody would run the 225/45/17 on an HS SVTF. Seems pretty clear to me that is is the worst choice of the three sizes. Maybe they were on sale?

Code:
Size Price Tread TR Diam Calc Diam
225/40ZR17 $257 8.9" 23.8" 24.09"
225/45ZR17 $257 8.8" 24.7" 24.97"
245/40ZR17 $266 9.3" 24.5" 24.72"
Edit: The diameters listed on TR for these Hoosiers do not match the calculated diameters for the printed size. I added a column to the above table to show the differences. This sort of thing is common with racing tires; even street-class autocross tires are often wider and shorter than their calculated sizes. For example, the calculated diameter for a standard 215/45/17 is 24.62", which coincidentally rounds to the same 24.7" that TR lists for the 225/45/17 Hoosier A6.

I'm pretty sure he was running the 245/40's at least at Packwood last year. Maybe he changed afterwards?

Oh, you'll be fine. The v710 doesn't have the same sizes available as the A6, anyway, so it is a different conversation. For the A6, you're comparing 225/40 to 225/45, so there is no width to be gained by going larger. For the v710, though, you're comparing 215/40 to 225/45, so you do gain width by going larger. Still, I would guess that the 215/40 is faster, due to gearing, but then again I have found that I was faster with 225/50 than 205/50 on my 16" wheels, so I don't really know. The only real way to find out is for you to try both.

I'm probably not remembering correctly. It was quite awhile ago when we talked out his experience/setup at packwood.
