2012 Ford Focus Scheduled Maintenance

While perusing through the owner's manual, I was surprised to learn that in addition having an intelligent oil life monitor that effective extends the intervals between oil changes, the 2012 Ford Focus has no scheduled tune- ups. (at least non that is mentioned in the owner's manual).

Here's what my dealer rep said:

"The intelligent oil-life monitor, monitors your oil and the monitor will go as long as one year or 10,000 miles on the focus. This means that you don't have to change your oil untill 10,000 miles; if you do the oil monitor will let you know.

There is no maitinance schedule for the focus other than the oil changes at 10,000 miles and the spark plug changes at 100,000 miles. That is amazing. Just let me know if there is anything else i can do for you."


Is this correct? Is this pretty standard with new cars today? Nobody has ever mentioned this about the car and I have read through a lot print research before buying. If it it correct, then it would substantially lower the overall cost of ownership, especially over other/ older cars that require such maintenance. Just surprised it's never mentioned as a selling point.

This is pretty much the standard on vehicles over the past ten years. The only change in the past five years has been towards more synthetic fluids for the drivetrain. They reduce wear and allow the manufacturer to run a lighter weight oil which reduces drag and increases mpg.

I would still check my oil once in a while and depending on your driving Id probably still change the oil before 10k, especially if you are in a lot of stop and go traffic or running to the store etc a lot. Keep an eye on other fluids too and obviously tires, and clean battery terminals. The air filter is a no change filter, the transmission is dry, so no fluid there. And your belt is actually a chain. So yes technically a lot of the tune up stuff youd normally do pretty much should last a really long time.

The automatic is "fill for life" and has a 150k interval as does the manual. You should replace the air filter every 30k. It's all on pg 388 of owner's manual.

Posted via FF Mobile So the air filter is no longer the 100k lifetime filter that the duratecs have had since 05? And fill what? Ive heard seal for life but the transmission is dry, so what fluid to fill?

I think it just uses a low friction gear lubricant, but yes, doesn't require any regular maintenance.

**edit**

Owners manual states the use of 1.9 quarts of Motorcraft Dual Clutch transmission fluid. Also service interval is stated to be 150K miles for a fluid and filter change.

Dry in the case of the transmision doesn't mean no fluid, just less than the typical application.

Dry clutch as opposed to a wet clutch. The tranny still has fluid.
I wonder about the timing belt? 75,000?
