i joined a gym. i find that if i master a distance and time, I push five minutes pass it on the elliptical and treadmill. After a month, I gain a minute in my mile. I push myself to the point that i'm ready to be sick... of course, you can put as much effort as you need.

I got injuried on my ankle though... and i'm back to square one. but the conditioning i did really made a difference.

distance running is detrimental to muscle growth and you body (particularly your knees). The way humans developed, our natural motions were either walking or sprinting. You'll notice that alot of distance runners are skinny fat.

sorry, that isn't helpful, but there you go

Both. Elliptical to increase your endurance - because it's easier to increase cardio without as much effort. Then treadmill to work on speed. Short sprints to increase lung capacity for running long distances. You want to increase HGH... human growth hormones - which burn fat but retain muscle growth - through high intensity work-outs. Both machines will accomplish the goal together.

Fartlek runs and windsprints FTW.

I'm using couch to 10k right now on my iPhone. Good program.
