It seems that a lot of the people who are claiming low miles, or I should say lower than expected, on the highway are basing that on the computer/trip readout. From what I've read in a few posts it seems to be a problem with how the computer is set or which read out it is referring to (accumulated for actual mpg) rather than an actual problem with the gas mileage. I think you need to do a actual check by gallons pumped vs miles driven to see the actual mileage before relying solely on the trip computer.

I've seen the dash readout hit as high as 55mpg, so I'm uncertain of it's accuracy. I'm being rather conservative with the pedal, and have yet to fill up, so we'll see how it does when the tank gets topped off tomorrow.

Brand new to forum and Focus

Picked up my Focus a week ago. My first ford...Got it to drive for work to hopefully save some money on gas...In my first week of mixed driving I have averaged 32 mpg...500 miles or so. Today I was on my first extended highway driving, hilly roads, about 60 mph and the trip computer was reading as high as 37.5...I believe the manual says after 2000 miles you can expect to start getting your best, so far it is not bad. Pretty comfortable seats as well. The 32 was calculated manually and I reset the trip computer mpg when I fill up. The first tank, my trip computer and my manual calculations were the same.

This is a repost of a prior note ... but if you are trying to get a specific mpg on a specific trip

at the start reset Average MPG .. AND reset trip Odometer

if you don't reset the trip odometer it seems to take in prior milage into average, which you don't want to do to see a decent MPG on a specific trip.

give it until about 4-5000 miles, let the engine open up. take it easy for now. promise youll get better mileage once its broken in

The dealer asked that I reset the average on a trip home one night and see what it says, which I did. It seems on a 60 mph highway it goes up to 42-43 mpg. If I get on the interstate and set the cruise for 75, the flower petals on the eco flower for speed start falling off and the MPG start dropping to around 36 - 38. I would think that a 6 speed could compensate for 75, but I'll take this reading over the previous one. I still haven't cracked 1k miles yet so I believe it'll work itself out over time. I'll be doing a manual calculation soon to see how it matches up.

As others have said, try the following:
Reset odometer to 0
reset average MPG

Now, start your drive from when you are home. Your initial numbers will seem low, perhaps 21mpg for the first part of your drive, since you will be going from 0 miles per hour and hitting stop signs, traffic lights, etc. Once you get to the point where you start to drive in better than stop and go traffic, your average will start to go up. Since you will be burning fuel while backing out of a driveway, or stopped, that causes your average miles per gallon to seem really really low initially, but the average will go up as you get to really drive.

As I said, I have been seeing between 30 and 34 miles per gallon as my daily average, which I do the above resets on the trip computer for. The 30 as my low was a bad traffic day with above average time spent in stop and go traffic. This is a combination of highway and "local roads" driving, and I have been using the "cheap gas", 87 octane no-name stuff rather than going out of my way for better gas from Mobil, or Shell. I am sure that if I put that better brand of gas in, that it may result in an extra 1-2 miles per gallon, but I need to drive an extra few miles out of my way to get there, and will pay an extra 10 cents per gallon for regular 87 octane gas. Would the trade-off really be worth it? Probably not.

Just filled up with about 207km on the tank.
Overall, I managed 4.58 l/100km, or about 52 US mpg.

90% highway, always going to the speed limit (100km/h, 62mph)
When going down hill, I would slowly accelerate to about 110km/h (almost 70mph), then release the gas pedal and let it coast (in gear, so you get the effects of the fuel cutoff), then give it gas again when it hit 95km/h. No drafting , and no driving under the speed limit. And yes, I used the same pump as the previous fillup, and even filled it to 3 clicks since I didn't believe it at first (last fillup I only went to 1 click)

Needless to say I am very happy. 1600km about on the engine now.
