2012 Focus - Add NAV after the fact?

Wondering if anyone could answer this. I have a new 2012 Focus SEL with MyFord Touch and no on screen NAV. Curious if this could be added after the fact. From some reading online it I see things that say all I would need is the SD card from Ford to go in the SD Card reader. Ford's official response on syncmyride.com is that the car has to be built with on screen NAV and cant be added after the fact. I dont buy the response 100%. The car already has NAV through Sync Services, just no on screen. If the car already has MFT and the SD slot to put the car in, what else would the car have to be built with to add on screen NAV to the existing MFT setup?

someone else was saying that there was hardware components involved, like a GPS, but I have no idea.

Buy a Garmin. It would probably be cheaper, and easier.

I'm interested in seeing how well this solution would work: Take and Android smartphone running Google Navigation, and plug in the video output from the phone into to the VGA input in the center console. Hopefully Sync could completely control the Google Nav Application, although probably not through MFT, but through voice commands or the steering wheel controls.

I contacted Ford about this directly a few months ago when I was considering buying an SEL off of a lot in central PA. They insisted that it would be a mistake and there was no way to do an upgrade down-the-line.

I'm sorry, but it's not looking good.

My read of this article is that, no, NAV cannot be added after the car has been built:

Great article, thanks for the link. So in essence, NAV is already in there if you have MFT but if you didnt get it activated at the factory then your out of luck. Now if someone could just find a way to hack this and make it active.... :)

On the flip side, I think Ford is missing an opportunity here. If the NAV is technically already built into the car and just disabled, you would figure there would be an opportunity here for them to make some $$$ by letting customers activate it after the fact if they wanted to.

As it stands, I have Navigon on my iPhone 4 which is absolutely fantastic and did not cost me anywhere near what the option price of on screen NAV is with MFT.

I read about this on a Ford Edge forum. Sounds like Ford will only allow it to be done as it's built at the factory.

True but I think the fact is that certain key features for the gps etc are not installed in the car, which helps them cut cost out per car, and thats why it isnt just a quick update. You can do without it to be honest lol, you dont want to get attached to gps, especially since they dont always work right.
