SVT or 2.3, it's really personal preference. If you want a daily driver find a well maintained standard car. But if you want a rally or road race car you'll save LOADS of time and money by buying a car that is already set up for racing and then you can set it up to suit you.

yes, in general, the zetec parts are cheaper. the zetec really platform has been nearly perfected including going through quaife for the dogbox if you want to. don't get me wrong, other foci are good too. just that the svt and zetec platforms are proven in rally, i've yet to see a dura rally car. the dura has more potential for power, but the winner of 2wd rally events are stock zetec foci. cheap, reliable and plenty of power. in rally, in fwd, you don't need 200 whp NA, svt will get you in plenty of trouble and it alread has the brakes.

Check out BigSandwich's car on FJ. 2.3 swap into a 2000 chassis. Fastest 2WD car at Sandblast rally (southcarolina), fastest 2WD car in Rally America class, Rally Mexico.

2003-2004 hatch with 2.3 Duratec is the car to have :D

If your going to go hatch and rally. Get either an 02-04 SVT or an 03-04 ZX3 duratec 2.3 five speed with advancetrac. Both already have four wheel disc, though the SVT has bigger brakes and the Getrag six speed is going to be better suited for your needs. The SVT also has larger stock sway bars and much more aggressive cams. If you want a sedan, hands down get an ST.
