There is a GM part number for a cap with the correct threads: 12556597. Last time I bought one it was under $8.
My goal was to fix the exhaust leak at the intake side from where the little bushing or what ever failed. It was puffing out exhaust, you couldn't hear it but it was bothering me. I never planned to remove it, but since it was leaking it went by by.

Thank you for the part number. I definitely recommend it compared to what I used. While searching for a place to get it I ran across this guy which looks like it would work by directly plugging into the header. You could really use ether one.

You can do that too, really you just need something shaped like the EGR port, a gasket or RTV, and reuse the old bolts to hold it on. You could get the materials to make your own cheap at home depot or any store like that.

nice write up, can't stress the tune enough though. It may take awhile to really do any damage but doing so will increase combustion temperature that the egr is designed to reduce at higher rpm.

what I'm saying is there is the chance to detonate because timing hasn't been compensated for the shortened burn time. So, tune it ;)
