Supercharger or Engine work ?

In a few months, i will have enough money to get a JRSC.
Now, I'm thinking of scraping the whole SC idea and going with doing more engine work.

I use my car for everyday driving and was wondering what would be best for power, gas mileage and cost ?

1. Jackson Racing Supercharger 5-6psi ?

or

2. Get new head, header, exhaust system, intake manifold, cams, and some other necessary engine work to get it to 160WHP ?

I would get the supercharger. All the engine mods will take away low end torqe and make driving on the street less comfortable, because you have to rev higher to get the power. I just read a mag today comparing the SVTF to the neon ST4 and Mazda. That was one of there complaints about the SVTF was the lack of low end torque. On the other hand, a supercharger makes the torque go up throuout the rpm range. Personally I would save for a turbo though. Super chargers take a lot of power just to run them. A turbo has less strain on the engine and makes better power numbers. But the cost is high

Didn't they say that the HP numbers for JRSC was really conservative and there are potential for greater? If this was the case then I would go for the JRSC.

I don't plan on going turbo. Don't have the cash and don't need more than 160-170WHP.

I'd get the JRSC. I personally favor turbos much more than superchargers, but I'm just a poor high school kid and there's no way in hell I'm gonna shell out $5,500 for a turbo kit.

Can't you just add a smaller blower pulley and up the boost too? How much horsepower can you get out of it with the supercharger alone? And I assume the supercharger comes with bigger injectors and fuel pump?

Plus you could always modify the engine later with the blower when you have some more cash.

Keep in mind the jackson racing kit doesnt make a ton of power and you will be lucky to get 5psi out of the standard kit, JRSC said that in Jan or Feb they will have the boost upgrade kit available for the focus which they say will put it at 8psi, but I have the basic kit on my car it it will make 5psi at peak boost at almost redline and I have gotten some replacement parts from JR to try to produce more boost (because they say the kit will produce 6psi) havnt gotten there yet and some other people arnt getting the 6psi as well so good luck on whatever you decide

jrsc u will be lookin at 4.5 psi for boost. and even with work on the jrsc you will never see over 8-9 psi even with the big boost kit. the blower on it is just crappy and in my eyes JRSC was just trying to be first on the market for fi to make cash off of it real quick. they havent really followed their product up with anything like kits to swap blowers, and if im not wrong, they dont even have a new pulley out yet for their own kit.

personally, id do some motor mods stay n/a and maybe a 50 shot. without head work and just bolt ons and cams u can break into 14s as we all know. the amount of work and money to get a jrsc into 14s wont be anywhere near it. im not even sure what the fastest zx3 with the m45 is... after being out for 3 yrs now, u'd figure we would know something like that. we already know what the vortech kit can do in its early stages and its more than the jrsc will come close to.

I vote naturally aspirated. What kind of engine work do you plan on having done if you go n/a?

What would it take to make a stock engine produce 180 crank HP ?
