True, but wouldn't you want to use a synthetic oil in the winter for this exact reason? I've never had any troubles just starting my car and going that didn't stem from the battery in the winter.

A perfect example... my neighbor has a new Scion Xb (with exhaust lol), never lets that thing warm up at all. Its not even a year old, and that poor motor sounds like CRAP, no doubt due to the stress of starting it up and driving off immediately w/o proper oil lubrication. Put it this way... my other neighbor's diesel VW has a quieter sounding engine. When its cold out, let the car warm up a few minutes, simple as that. I cant stand watching idiots fire up their car on 0 degree mornings and drive off like a bat out of Hell. That poor, poor, poor engine.

The only reason I warm it up in the winter is for the frost on the windows. It makes it easier to clear them. If there's no frost or it's a light frost, I usually don't warm it up.

that is why i want to warm the engine...
i don want my car to sound like crap and drive like crap.
cold start engines are normally slow and lack of power...

i let my car warm up in the morning for a few reasons , 1 because i dont like getting into a freezing car , 2 because its really hard to shift till its warm ( using amsoil in my 5spd ) 3 im always hammerin on it so i let it warm up.

I let my car warm up year round, at least until the revs fall to normal (900 rpm). I`ve done this since day one and my car is six years old, has 65,000 miles and has never failed to start nor has it left me stranded somewhere. The car still has the original battery in it and the spark plugs have never been pulled for any reason, not even when I installed the Jackson SC almost three years ago.

I think that the reason auto makers don`t recomend warming up a car is because it uses more fuel and thus hurts their gas mileage figures. End of story.

i know i should, and when i have time or it's below 0 i do let it warm up. but most of the time im sprinting in a hurry to school so i dont have time to, in which case i just baby it and let it coast in neutral when i can. because I live on a mountain, i can coast downhill in neutral for about 3 miles :P

Why is this? The consensus on my S40 forums (yes, we are all turbo'd) is that the car will be fine with <5 minute warm up. No car should hammer it straight out of the gate of course, but it really is no different for us turbo'd cars.

Hmmmmm...5 miles of gas wasted every day.....maybe that is part of the reason I retired at 56......

The MPG goes down in the winter due to winter blend gas as well.
