TOM: Turbo and Emissions

Can you tell me what your home state does for emissions testing? Do they just hook you up to the OBDII?

The reason I ask is because you seem to be very well versed when it comes to turbos. Without worrying about the visual inspection, can a turbo pass emissions on the OBDII using a correct tune?

I want to get forced induction, but I don't see it fit having to pay $3000 plus installation on a kit and then it not passing the emissions.

I am not trying to bash anyone but some inspectors will look under the hood directly at the turbo and have no clue about it. I have had that happen a few times. Got caught a few other times but mostly it is just a plug into the OBD-II for a scan of disabled O2 sensors and active and stored codes in the ECM. Some do sniffer tests but its hard to go by those because some car have different size turbos, injectors, exhaust and tuning. For that case its just a matter of how its setup.

Also, $3000 for a kit is a good deal. Don't forget you will need a LOT of stuff with that. Not discouraging you just dont get your hopes up like I did, were not like honda's haha. Youd probably spend around 4500 plus installation. If you shop right.

Good luck with the build!!! And you shouldn't have any problems passing emissions testing.

All the sniffer tests I've had were done at idle- you should be able to maintain good emissions readings at idle regardless of a turbo. In my area, you can go in for pre-tests, it's free, and then if you need help there are tricks you can use to pass in most cases.

so did the disabled 02 sensors cause you to fail? i was under the impression that 2 "not ready" codes would fail you. does a turbo tune also disable the EGR off?

thanks for all the info guys!

A OBDII test will not show disabled o2 , EGR or anything else that has been disabled with in the tune

OBDII test only shows a readiness test meaning the ECU is ready to or is performing it normal OBD tests or failed codes for systems that are there but not working properly it cannot check for systems properly turned off (disabled) in the tune like rear o2 , egr , evap

So unless some techs or states do a visual inspection, a turbo w/ tune should pass the OBDII tests correct? I may eventually go FI but want to make sure it will pass state inspection. As far as I've heard from other local guys, Utah does the OBDII test, not visual.
