I bought my 05 Focus ST with 14K. Several thousand miles later, it became difficult to shift, especially into first and second after a cold start. Ford replaced the clutch, but that didn't solve the problem. I took the car back, and the dealer kept the car for a week and a half, and finally brought in a factory rep. They discovered a bad shift rod in the transmission, which they replaced, and it has shifted fine since. All of the shift related issues were repaired under warranty and the cost of the loaner was also absorbed by Ford.
Last week, at 45k, the charging light started coming on at low revs. This time I paid $524. for the installation of a new alternator. I'm disappointed that a factory alternator (the controller actually) would fail at 45K.
I love the way the car drives. It is quick, handles remarkably well, averages over 30mpg in summer and about 29mpg in (Maine) winter, and is reasonably comfortable for my 6'2" frame.

We've had our car for almost 4 years and almost 60,000 km's (36,000 miles) and other than having to replace the rear brake shoes (at 21,000 miles!) we haven't spent dime-one other than scheduled maintenance intervals.

This Focus is more than I had ever hoped. Ford quality has improved immensely since 1999, and we will seriously look at buying a Fiesta in two years time.

I keep commenting on this lol.....

still nothing yet, minus a few squeaks and rattles that come and go......and also non-working rear windows (they were disconnected by previous owner, I just need to go hook them back up )

stock suspension, stock clutch, stock brakes...... stock everything pretty much. 109,350 on the odo.

Several minor paint flaws; the dealership is getting right on those under warranty. The rear passenger side door was hung visibly too high and misaligned. Ditto on dealership/warranty repair there. Makes one wish the Wayne plant had quality control to match the Hermosillo plant that built my rock-solid Escort.

No other problems of note, if you don't count the strange behavior SYNC has when shuffling "artist" and "genre"-based play requests. Since SYNC was programmed by Microsoft and not Apple, what else would you expect?

Update: Just got off the phone with the dealer. My service rep says the car won't be finished until July 6th because they're waiting for a new center stack dash panel needed to fix a hair in the paint surface of the original. He also told me that the body paint warranty cost that Ford has to eat is $4,300! "I guess that one slipped through at the paint line QC check." I guess!! There goes Ford's profit on three or so Foci!

I replaced the clutch at 30k under warranty, replaced the starter, replaced the ignition, replaced the gauges because they quit lighting up(had to wait nearly 6 months for one of the 2 parts needed to come in to the dealer), replaced the a/c condenser box(leaking in the floor board), replaced the clutch master cylinder(leaking in drivers floor board), replaced the intake manifold thanks to the DSI, replaced the valve cover gasket, replaced the fan assembly because of a broken mount, replaced sway bar end links, replaced the snorkel because it fell apart, replaced the factory audiophile 6 disc bc it wouldnt play new cd's without skipping endlessly, replaced the o2 sensor twice, and I have just replaced the thermostat housing for the 4TH time!!!! THANK THE GOOD LORD FOR THE FORD PREMIUM CARE ESP AND A $100 DEDUCTIBLE. Everything that has ever went wrong with an SVT has went wrong with mine and I just now rolled 96k miles. Still love it though and its still under warranty til 100k or dec. 09.

I have a 2001, automatic, SE, with 105K. Here is my laundry list.

Broken front coil spring
fuel pump failed
replaced frozen front caliper
replaced broken stabilizer links
EGR tube broke
thermostat failed
rear window power regulator broke
turn signal cancel has broke 3 times
tilt wheel lock failed

Other than that it has been pretty good. The only repair I didn't do myself was the fuel pump and that was because I was out of town when it happened and my mother in law was borrowing the car.

Add a failed coil pack on cylinder #2 that happened last week while on vacation.

Forgot to list I had to have the mass air flow sensor rewired.
