If the air sample is the same but the housing and associated air flow is actually larger the fuel quantities will be wrong (lean).

Short answer is do not swap MAFS housings or alter them in any way or you may incur problems.
Unless you tune it to show the proper air flow per maf voltage as i have done :D

Because the standard Zetec and SVT MAF tubes both have the same inlet/outlet outside diameters. And they will bolt up to either airbox the same. The difference is that the SVT maintains a consistent diameter inside the tube, while the standard Zetec tube has an area in the middle of it where the MAF sensor sits that is smaller. Trust me, you don't want to use the SVT MAF tube or MAF sensor (or both) without a tune. Your car will run like S H I T (except maybe at full throttle where it is getting enough fuel)!!!

There are actually 2 parts to the MAFS, the sample tube and the sensor itself. If you look at an AEM intake you'll understand, the sensor can unbolt from the sample tube (is the actual name for the housing the MAFS sits in).
The outer diameter is the same for either SVT or standard sample tube, in fact my 70mm is the same O.D. as my stock one.

(picture from aironjack)

The SVT sample tube does not have that step, nor does my 70mm.

good info, im messaging Tom back and fourth right now and getting my tune and programmer friday. since you guys make good sense of this what parts will i need to run the full svt intake? i see the svt tube from maf to TB doesnt go across valve cover it just does a 90 degree bend right off the maf, what tube can i buy for mounting the svt maf sample tube to the stock TB? thanks so much for your input sorry.

Your stock intake tube will fit the SVT sample tube.
The SVT sample tube will fit either the SVT or standard air box lid.

So essentially you'd want and SVT sample tube and SVT air box with the SVT snorkel.

But if your talking the whole shebang then you also need (at minimum) the SVT upper and lower intake manifolds, the SVT throttle body and the SVT intake tube. This is covered in the SVT to zetec intake manifold swap in the How-To's.
