Could use some help please?

I drive a 2001 zx3 and Im just over 90K.
My problem is the car will drive fine for about an hour but then you will feel the car start to stutter and you;ll step on the gas and there will be no power and it eventually stalls. I have to let it sit for awhile and then Im able to start it again and continue. Its even worse on very hot days. Ive told this to a few people I know and they think its the Catalytic Converter getting clogged. If thats true does that mean I need a new one or can it be cleaned out at all? Or could it be something else. All the gauges are fine and only the check engine light is on but thats been on for the last 5 years.

If the cat was clogged it would run very poorly hot or not.

Does the car ever overheat?

No it doesnt overheat. It does run like this on any given day it just happens sooner on hotter days than cooler ones.

You definitely need to find out what the codes are first thing. If you have Autozone or similar parts shops you can probably get it scanned for free. Write down the code numbers and look them up here. Do not just start replacing stuff that the salesman says is bad. There is more to the codes than what comes up on their scanners. You may have had the same code for 5 years but it may also have others now.

I ran it through the code reader that I bought and the code I got was P1401 according to the book I got its saying theres a problem with the auxiliary emissions control. Would that actually be the cause of the car breaking down after driving for awhile? The book didnt go into any further detail on the problem so is there anywhere else I can look the code up?

Thanks Capt. I'll let my mechanic know that when I bring it for a tune up on friday. Does anyone on here know what that actually means?

HA, I was guessing an EGR problem.

DPFE is the short name for what your CEL problem is, and I believe it's related to a stuck EGR- though I'm not completely sure. We have How-To's about changing out the DPFE yourself on Zetec engines. It's very simple to DIY, and the part costs about $50, give or take $10. That will clear the CEL, but I really don't think that it would cause the car to shut off like that.

It could be that the EGR is stuck open, the DPFE monitors the EGR operation, and if the EGR is stuck open then once the engine warms up to normal operating temperature it causes misfires and possibly detonation. Now I don't think that it would cause the engine to cut off like you're describing- typically the ECU would simply retard the timing to compensate for any spark knock.

I think you're likely to have multiple problems. I'm thinking that you have a fuel pump that is near the end of it's life, plus the DPFE problem. You can do the basic fuel pump diagnosis yourself, all you have to do is sit in the car with everything off- radio, wipers, etc. Turn the key to ON, and listen. You should hear a buzzing sound as soon as you turn the key to ON. That's the fuel pump, it should prime the fuel system in less than 5 seconds. If it runs for longer than 10 seconds, your fuel pump is near the end of it's life.

That's only a guess, and that's difficult to do over the internet.
