Tell me what you think about this "intake"

I'm not sure if this is where it goes, but I'm guessing they were trying to do something for performance?

Heres the story. Lady brings her car in to work for the check engine light being on and bogging down on acceleration. As we are looking at it today, we discover this...

What you see is all that was on the car...all the stuff past the screen was gone from the wheel well. What gives? What "benefit" would you get from putting a piece of paper there and restricting the air flow?

That's like the best intake system I've ever seen! I wonder how never thought of this before...

Looks like they tried to use a dryer sheet for a "filter". Did the intake eat the rest of it?
No comment on anyone that would do that to a car....

The paper was likely put there after the cel came on, attempting to "fix" it by adding some restriction they had removed with the box. While the intake path was straightened, running without a filter is not a good performance mod. Likely they thought the filter was in the silencer box. Basically they started out with the right idea, but still the above opinions are true. (LOL) Several people here have removed the same parts as this person, but added a cone filter there instead of a piece of paper. It's supposed to be good for a rather minor gain, but in the least it is WAY cheaper than letting a dealership install a new filter box at 100k miles. The discounted "shop" cost for one of those without any labor is $80. Thats one of the downsides of a non-servicable unit; eventually it needs servicing and then it's EXPENSIVE.
... and again,
OMFG LOL ROFLCOPTER!
