So I'm doing an A/T shift knob... couple o' questions

I want to put a new shift knob in my '03 Sedan.
I know how to disassemble it all... but I want to disable the "pushy downy stick thing that locks it in park." (because I don't know what it's really called). So far I've discovered through my due diligence that I have to push it down to put it in gear, and to remove my keys from the ignition, it has to be let back up. I want to disable that completely and just have a "manual" style shifter that I don't have to push down or use a button.

Has anyone ever done this before?

(EDIT:) It is indeed an automatic. I forgot to mention that.
