Exterior door handle stopped working (pics included)

Randomly one day I went to my car and the door handle was very loose. It just wiggles around and stays open when I pull it out. I finally got in there today to take it all apart after getting my new door handle I received in the mail but it appears it is not the door handle that is broken because the new one does the same thing.

After playing with it for a while, I realized that the bar didn't seem to be attached to the handle in any way so I couldn't figure out how it was supposed to work at all. I then came on here to do some investigating. The bar works fine when I pull it down manually.

After reading through some more threads on here I decided to check around the bottom of the door for broken parts and I found this:

I'm not 100% it's related but since nothing else is broken on that door, I'm assuming it is but I have no idea how to reattach it.

Any ideas?

Alright ladies and gents. I appreciate all the feedback and advice I've gotten but I'm glad to say that I figured it out on my own.

Unfortunately the pics I took at first were taken with the door handle in place, which made it so I couldn't see part of the assembly. After taking the handle off and taking some snap shots with my phone, I found the broken piece.

Your post is the first I've seen with this problem. If nobody has had the problem it going to be hard for someone to give suggestions. You'll find a lot of un-answered questions on the forums.

Please be patient, sometime is takes several days some times weeks to get a helpful response. But now that you are working it out, you will be able to help the next person.

Welcome to the forums, I will be going out to the garage tomorrow. I'll try to see what research I can do to help you out.

The rubber piece goes on the inside door crash bar, it prevents window rubbing the bar. Mounts about 3/4 back the length of the door.
