Spare key question

hi all
we purchased a 2012 a couple weeks ago and its into the dealer today for the wiper motor recall and the transmission reprogramming.

when we purchased it there was only one remote and key and the selling dealer is getting us another one today.
my question is,can you get a normal key cut that will just open the door if the keys are locked in?
just something that will open the car and not start it up.
i dont mind paying ford to make one,i just dont want the $225 remote and key combo.
i see on ebay they sell just remotes(no key)but i cant figure out how it would get programmed to unlock the doors.

The 2012 can take up to three keys with the stock sensor.
To make a spare just to open the door is a reasonable idea, but finding the blank might be hard to do. The 'lasercut' key.. most dealers cannot do the work at the dealer. The machine to cut the key is expensive.
If you are in a big city, an automotive locksmith may have the machine, and a blank which would work.
On the other hand, a separate fob might work too, just to open the door.
On my last car I had a key cut to only open the door.
I would think the independent automotive locksmith would better be able to get you a key just for the door. At a much better price.
(If the dealer could get you one, it would be coming from an independent locksmith, with the dealer adding on his markup)

just the bare remote that i linked to would be ideal.
i cannot figure out how it would be programmed without having a key with it.
if the remote would work i would not even bother with a key as the most likely scenario would be locking the keys in car and would only reqire a way to unlock the car.
we could both carry the spare remotes in this case.no key cutting required.

Um from what I recall the 2012 can handle up to 8 programmed keys, not just 3. Most people however wouldn't need more than four keys/ remotes.

I live near Raleigh, NC, which is a reasonably large metropolitan area. When I tried to get a spare key made, I found that none of the Ford dealers could cut a key blank. All they could do is order a key (with the remote attached) based on your VIN for $250 US.

After numerous phone calls to locksmiths, I could only find two who said they could do the job. It turned out that one of them had the correct machine but was missing a fixture. Fortunately, the other locksmith was able to do the job. They charged $20 for a blank and $70 US to cut the key (to amortize the expense of the expensive machine) and $20 to program the key. So if you want a key just to unlock the door but which cannot start the car (good to tape under a bumper), all you will save is on the reprogramming. If you buy a blank on ebay, it is conceivable that the locksmith may refuse to cut the key on the grounds that if the key material is too hard it will damage their machine.

An alternative is to buy the stick-on keypad from Ford. It lists for $95 US but you can get it for $68 online.

Elizabeth's idea of a separate remote will work. The separate remotes for Escapes, etc. will work. I bought one from my dealer for $49 US and it looked exactly like the ones you can get on ebay for $15. You should be able to program it yourself as long as you have the two original keys.

^^This. Exactly what I thought when I read the OP of the thread. I think it is the way to go, 5 digit combo. My F350 came with one, and on the SE sedan I had for a short time before the Titanium, I had one put on. They work great, you only need one, and you never worry again about a locked-in key.

I use mine at the airport, intentionally hide and lock the key in the truck, and then there's no worry about losing my key somewhere on the trip. Just enter the combo, retrieve the key from the secret spot, and away I go.

The keypad sticks on. It is also battery operated. When the battery dies the instructions call for replacing the whole keypad. The battery is not designed to be replaced. There are other threads on these keypads if you search for them. I believe that at least one deals with replacing the battery with the pad on the car. You need to be careful not to scratch the paint when disassembling. That is all I remember.
