signs of clogged cat

What do I need to look for to find a clogged cat? I have an aftermarket one in my car and it looks like I bottomed out on it.

My car has no power and keeps blowing the vacuume lines for tie egr system. Exhaust noise is not as loud as it used to be at rear of car and the tone up front sounds different than a simple leak.

My experience with a clogged cat came one snowy day when the P/U didn't want to go over 40 mph. When I got to my destination (short trip) I noticed the exhaust didn't even blow the loose snow around! Revved it up & felt almost nothing coming out the pipe...

Start & idle OK, but no power.

Disconnected tail pipe B4 muffler, and it STILL was running quiet with NO tail pipe or muffler, Kinda a hint there!

Cleaned it out for an emergency fix - LOTS of noise without tail pipe then! And all worked normally when reattached & test driven.

Many folks have noted that with a partially plugged one it'll tend to get REAL hot (glowing) after a drive, so that would be another sign.

With the "Wack" you say it took, the ceramic could have broken & jammed up the pie with loose pieces.

Hopefully it's an easy one to disconnect, so you can possibly look inside &/or test with it disconnected...

luck!

P.S. - The one on the P/U was SO clogged it wouldn't even rev up fully with the throttle floored!

Huh too bad the idiot exhaust shop welded it in with no flanges. I may just gut the thing or remove it all together.

Sounds like you have a clogged or damaged cat to me. When mine broke into pieces and clogged the pipe the exhaust note was much much quieter and I eventually had to damn near floor it just to keep up with traffic. That was when I decided to put my header on and sure enough when I took the cat off it was broken. You could even see where it was glowing red hot at one point, it discolored the metal so bad. Felt like I gain 40hp when I hollowed it out lol

It's POSSIBLE, but not as likely.

Loose pieces would have to fall out of the way when shut down, then plug it up again after running,,, NOT too likely...

Start a thread with all your info. and folks will try to help with YOUR issue...

Luck!
