Open panel in trunk (hatch)

When I was putting the cargo liner into my 2013 hatchback today, I noticed these open panels in the trunk area. There is one on each side. Does everybody have these little panels open? I was wondering these would transmit much noise into the back of the car?

These pictures are on the side in the back and looking sorta upward toward the hatch opening.

Mine are the same way. I discovered this when I took out my taillights. Sort of surprising, really.

I dunno. Seems like it would be a source for air, noise, or monsters to enter the cabin.

Those things are there to take off the pressure of the cabin when you close your hatch. If you put something in front, it will be difficult to close doors and hatch and can be dangerous at some point.
