Went to turn on the car and I heard a loud pop
I went to turn on the car and I heard a loud pop. Turned off the car checked the hood and here's the outcome.
![]() ![]() I'm assuming that the car backfired which caused this to happen. What now? I swear this car never gives me a break. Is there anything I should check for? I looked at the intake manifold and it doesn't look like there's any damage. Also, If I put everything back in place, would it be safe to turn on the car? thanks |

This is far more common then you think , I have seen it a lot
Put the manifold back on , check all hoses going to the intake as some could be blown off and start the car EVERY Focus SVT I start I hold the throttle to the floor till I hear the engine spinning then let off the throttle You have a LOT of oil going to your intake , this is from the breather off the valve cover and the PCV and why I always tke these vents off the intake and vent them to the grown Tom

I don't think I touched the gas pedal once while starting my car because it revs to 3k anyways, neighbors would kill me if I held the gas down I think?

Thanks for the reply. Is there a way of putting those rubber elbows back in place. They're a pain in the ass and I can't put them in correctly.

if you hold the pedal to the floor, your backfire won't build pressure up in the intake if it happens. on the svt with those couplers... its especially important. that's my guess anyway.
I'm not familiar with the SVT though... did they eliminate the fuel shutoff that occurs if you open the throttle all the way or is that exactly why you do that, Tom? do svts leave a little fuel behind when shut off? edit: hey I'm not entirely sure of the best way but you'll need to cut those crimped clamps off and temporarily use hose clamps on them to get you around.

I have as much oil as you do in the intake...
Tom, you are really suggesting getting those hoses to breathe to the ground? Perhaps putting a container underneath a crankcase breather might help me getting my lost oil back! |

So what you're suppost to have the gas down till when it spins? What is engine spinning like when it starts up?

Just hold the throttle down till the motor fires off. Say like when you flood the carb.= hold the throttle to the wood till it fires off.

Hold throttle down wide open , as soon as you hear the started turning the enging let off the throttle even if it hasnt started yet , DO NOT HOLD THE THROTTLE DOWN TILL THE ENGINE STARTS
By the time you hear the started turn the engine and let off the engine would of turned over enough to spart the cyl and move any fuel out of the intake or backfired and all the psi would go out the TB through the air filter A for the stock crimp type clamps they have to be cut off and thrown away , you need a very narrow clamp to go back on then C-F-M sels a hose kit that has the correct screw style clamps called red heads Tom
