pretty awesome increase. Is it some type of factory safety default to keep the boost lower at high temp? Will this tune increase the chance of damaging the internals?

The tune is still safe to be used every day. SCT has tested the focus ST and see that it can safely handle more the power when the engine is at the higher temp without any issue.
