New to focus. Wanna buy a 2000-2004. Basic buying questions....

Ok, im interested in purchasing a focus because i wanna save gas....smh Im interested in a 2000-2004 ford focus, dont wanna spend more than $4,000. The questions i have are:

1. is there any particular one of those years that give more problems than another?

2. is there a particular engine that i should get?

3. which trim level has the most options?

4. anything major i need to look out for?

thanx for the questions. i know they are basic and kinda broad..... peace

i say go for a Zetec powered Focus. they're in all the bodystyles but standard in the ZX3 (3 door hatch). i say which ever bodystyle, trim level, engine you find, you should change ALL the fluids out for fresh new fluid and change the timing belt. i say timing belt because theres no telling when the previous owner had it changed or if they've even bothered to change it. you have 4 engines to choose from: SPI, Zetec, 2.3L Duratec (if you can find one) and SVT Zetec. never owned one but the majority ive seen on here have Zetec's and some are even swapped in Zetec's. some swap it over because their car came with an SPI which from what ive read is known for dropping a valve (or 2?).

^OP will never find a 2.3L Dtec or SVT Zetec for $4000 unless it has ridiculous mileage or is damaged/doesn't run.

Do NOT buy one with the SOHC SPI engine. They're notorious for dropping valve seats. And even when running right, are dangerously slow, imo.. DO buy one with either a Zetec or Duratec engine. For that price, you'll probably only find Zetecs with 100-130k. At least that's how it is in my area. Which, if maintained, Zetecs are great motors and will go 200k+ no problem.

Do you have kids? If so you may want to look for a sedan, ZXW (wagon) or ZX5 (5-door hatch.) If not, then either a sedan or ZX3 (3-door hatch) would do just fine.

Yep! It'll say Zetec right on the top. :) Those engines are pretty rock solid man, you shouldn't have any issues with them

And welcome to FF! Let us know if you get one! And post pictures!

That 2nd post in that thread has pictures of what each engine looks like. Basically just stay away from the SPI engine (bottom pic).
