Questions about custom exhausts

Okay forum members, I ask for your knowledge and expertise!

I am contemplating getting a dual exhaust installed on my car. I was never a big exhaust guy...I am one of the few who enjoys the car being quiet. With that said, after reading forum member sleighman's dual exhaust thread: http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=269081 I fell in love. The look and the sound is perfect in my opinion. However he only changed the 3rd muffler and the piping from there on out as far as I can tell. If I were to do this I would want a full cat back system. Now that leads to a few questions..

What is the stock dimensions of the factory exhaust? I see their is a debate on the forums about whether to change to a 2.25 or 2.5 diameter exhaust...so what is it stock?

Since I like how sleighman's exhaust sounds with the first 2 mufflers/resonators the same...if I changed the piping to 2.5 diameter, I assume I have to change these resonators also? or can they be modified to fit the larger piping?

If so, what are some brands/your suggestions on replacing them?

I mainly want the performance gain and the look of the dual tips rather than the sound...crazy I know! but like I said, the sound of that Borla 40477 muffler is music to my ears.

Stock is 2 inch. If you plan few mods beyond the exhaust and maybe a CAI and are not interested in the future of maybe a header and tune, then I honestly believe that a 2.25 inch exhaust would be fine. If more is in the plans... then go 2.5 inch. Resonators and mufflers are owner's preference IMHO.

Basically if I went ahead and got a custom exhaust I would get the Steeda CAI and be done with it.

My other question is...does keeping 3 mufflers/resonators hurt the flow of exhaust in anyway? or is it merely to muffle sound? If it hurts performance then I might as well keep it stock.

You can build a near-zero backpressure system with mufflers and resonators in it, so long as you match the flow to at least meet your output. Careful selection of components will lead to a performance exhaust that is also quiet.

Do you have any suggestions or know of a brand/specific line of components that are known for being quiet?

My Borla setup is surprisingly quiet compared to every other custom 2.5" exhaust that's been documented on this site. I'm only running two mufflers and have the Steeda CAI as well, so it could be quieter. When I put the stock intake back in and drove it, it cut the sound in half at least.

A muffler slows things slightly and does cause some back pressure depending on design... Resonators don't do either but just cut resonation (sound).

Or you can do like I did you a glasspack and a magnaflow muffler, its quite while cruising and has a nice deep tone while accelerating and a brubble while slowing down haha.
