Talking Started my 2011 season this past Saturday.

Just wanted to share some info about my first time out with the Focus this year.

I did a test day / time trial with EMRA @ Lime Rock Park, CT.

This was a shakedown for the car prior to making my first race sometime in May.

The suspension mods detailed >>> HERE <<<< worked well.

The car now has 2 turns lock to lock with the relocated attacment point for the tie rod ends.

I was able to reduce bump steer down to a total of ~0.040" by maxing out the adjustments on the tie rod ends, and raising the steering rack about 8MM. I'll probably fine tune this a little more before the first race, but there was no negative behavior detected on track as is.

I was able to reduce static camber from -2.5 deg to -2.0 deg but still had plenty of grip. This combined with the upgraded splitter design to take advantage of 2011 rules changes left the car a little loose in the back. I plan on upgrading the rear wing and might play around with alternate RSB to fime tune the balance. The good news is that I'll probably be able to adjust the rear wing to get as much rotation as I can tolerate on tighter tracks and then dial in more wing to settle down the car on faster ones. I'm really happy to have this sort of flexibility in my set-up.

This was also the "break in" for my new billet crank detailed >>> HERE <<<

Looks like the oil pressure and such are just fine, and now I have no fears of crank failure. My next move will be to replace the stock ECU with one that can rev over 8300 RPM. I'm leaning towards using a Megasquirt 3, I just need to review other options before making the plunge.

Finally I had to run out to an autoparts store and cobble up a muffler since I blew away the 84db sound limits @ LRP. Even with a turn down the Fofo blew a 89db while on track.

The muffler fixed the problem, but i felt like I was dragging a boat anchor behind me down the striaghts :-(

But I would say that I still had a good day. Finished 8th of 56 overall. (I was running in a class of 1 so I was not directly challenged)

There was only 4 full bodied cars that were faster than me. 3 Vettes, and one Stang. The other 3 were Renault Spec Racers. The real kicker is that I was approx 2 seconds faster than a Ferarri 430 Scuderia!

My best lap was 1:03.902 on a 45F overcast day.

Complete Event Results >>> HERE <<<

Sorry, I don;t have any video, it was a hectic day, but here are some pics from the day...

You blew it by how much, and starting at what RPM? Just thinking something like supertrapp muffler might work here.

Yes I wanted to run a supertrapp but did not have many options on a saturday afternoon in suburban CT. I'm basically shifting @ 8000 RPM +/- 100. With a 3" exhaust and dynomax flow thru muffler its not very quiet..... Without a turn down I was hitting 96db last year @ watkins glen.

"Without a turn down I was hitting 96db last year @ watkins glen"

So you need to kill ~15DB. How do they measure the sound? At the tailpipe (inspection time?) or while you on track? (on track then assumes the meter is at least 10 feet away, and 3 feet above ground level).

My thinking >> The issue is, at 7K+, what is putting you over the 86DB limit is mid and high freqs. If 'aimed' at a mic or DB meter, can push the sound energy way up from distance (+20DB). A 'turn down' does not help greatly as the energy simply fragments. A 'turn up' would be better as your using atmosphere as an 'infinite baffle' (ref: airport noise mitigation techniques).

Yes they take a reading in pits @ rec inspection to ballpark your db but still take readings when live on track. I can see what you mean about the turn down/up but never thought of it that way. Its sort of SOP to use a turndown. Ill have to try it the other way around next time

Yes Its an 03 S-TYPE. Which does a great job. About 18-19 MPG towing on the highway. THE 300BHP 4.2 L V8 has plenty of power and can easily hit speeds that would earn me a moving violation. Its such a comfortable ride on long trips I almost dread the day I upgrade to an SUV or pickup with full trailer. This will be my 3rd year hauling the Focus with my Jag.

Hmmm! If there doing it in the pits then you might be SOL (depending) if they rely mostly on that. If however, there mainly concerned about track noise, then yes, A turn up can really work. Assuming your somewhat familiar with sound, A radial stack (concentric rings) from the pipe exit will help to keep the sound waves contained within a fairly narrow sonic field. Again, not much use if there putting a DB meter right at the pipe exit, but on track real DB reaching the stands would be greatly diminished (unless the stands are located above and very close to the track).

Posted via FF Mobilethe test in the pits is done from about 150ft with engine revving @approx. 1000<redline. This is just a courtesy check because they will refund your entrance fee if you don't put wheels on track. So if you fail sound check in the pits you can decide if you want to risk losing you entrance fee because you were black flagged for sound. I blew an 84 in the pits and took my chances. After they black flagged me, I had to fit the muffler or go home with no refund after only one session.
