Speed Reduction - 55 MPH Limit

Recently a Republican Senator brought attention to the possibility of a nationwide speed limit reduction. He cited studies that a 55 mile-per-hour limit would save two percent of highway fuel consumption a day.

The Energy Department's Web site said fuel efficiency drops sharply above 60 miles-per-hour. He said every five miles per hour above that costs drivers roughly the equivalent of paying 30 cents a gallon more at the pump.

A national speed limit was tried before, starting in 1974, but was dropped in 1995 when crude oil fell to $17 a barrel and gasoline cost $1.10 a gallon.

What are your thoughts, are you for or against reinstating the 55 MPH limit to save fuel?

i rember when california had the 55mph limit on all highways, no one ever drove 55 the cops usllay gave a 10mph buffer anyway and in cali if the speed limit droped to 55 no one would slow down to it. if im not doing 75 in the fast lane of I5 then i'll get ran over.

seriously, and with all the Mercedes and BMWs that ride 680 near San Ramon/Pleasanton area.. if You're going under 75 in the 2 left lanes, u will get run the over lol

i'm searching for the article to post.. but the summary was about Michigan. They recently RAISED the limit to 75, and have noted that virtually all road rage (obviously, reported, I'm sure there is still some) has been eliminated Maybe that says something, the worst-hit state as far as economic trauma - able to find something that helps it citizens to relax

although here in cali its the weed that doing the talking in the legislature

Apparently some of you guys are not taking this gasoline problem seriously. How would you like to stand in line for several hours just to get gas at any price? I've done it and it's no fun. That's what is in store...unless something is done quickly.

Here in the U.K. we currently pay £6.30p ($9.45c U.S.) If you had to pay that I am sure you would soon vote for 55mph if you thought it would save you gas and cash !!

No need for any police to enforce the 55mph limit. Here in the UK we have average speed cameras, you can do a hundred miles an hour, see a camera, slow down to the limit then blast up to a hundred again until you spot the next camera and slow down once more.
Trouble is, being average speed cameras they automatically work out your AVERAGE speed, if its over the limit the first thing you know about it is a speeding ticket in the post and three points on your licence ! Great savings on police salary bill and HUGE revenues collected from speeders !
