It's not so much about protecting the rear valance from melting, but helping the exhaust fit the rear of the car better. Right now, it's just dangling below the valance with no styling to integrate it into the overall look of the car.

Sure, the ST valance may not be functional, but it definitely looks better than what you've currently got going on.
