Correct me if I'm wrong, aside from some stations (Petrocanada) using gasoline antifreeze, isn't the big part of winter blends is that they contain ethanol?

That's Canada, in the U.S. all fuel must contain ethanol here in order to meet some bogus alternative fuel regulation requiring x amount of renewable energy consumed per year. Most pumps are marked up to 10% ethanol, but they may or may not contain much more which would damage engines and fuel systems.
