If you understand the engineering behind what I said it was perfectly clear.
Instead of the engine combusting fuel to drive the wheels through the transmission when the fuel is shut off the engine is driven by the wheels instead. The engine takes the energy from the wheels to continue to pump air while no fuel is injected into the cylinders. This does cause the car to slow down more aggressively than if the transmission was disconnected from the wheels by depressing the clutch and putting the car into neutral.
