Did you pull plugs? Those motors have a problem with dropping valve seats. You should be able to pull the timing belt cover and verify the belt condition, if it is good I would get a long screwdriver with a magnetic tip and put it down each plug hole, if you did lose a seat that will come back up with pieces of the seat on it.
