Question 2002 focus Could timing belt break without bending valves?

I have a 2002 ford focus lx 2.0 auto SOHC. Was driving and let off the gas to coast to a stop light. Light turned green so I went to get on the gas but the pedal would not go down. Coasted to the side of the road and quickly shut the car off. My car just hit 140,000 miles and has never had the belt changed. There was no noise no nothing that would give a sign something was wrong. After I turned it off the gas pedal was fine. I tried to turn it back on and it makes a soft cranking sound not up and down or scratchy. The guy who have me a tow at that time also said it sounded like the belt. Since I was coasting and turned it right off is there a chance I could of not bent any valves or anything? It sounded normal and quiet while running like always just wouldn't start after I shut off.
