Anything you put in the gas tank won't ever clean the intake valves unless you have fuel and air leaking out of the cylinder back into the manifold with these cars.
Direct fuel injection means there is no air/fuel mixture inside the intake manifold, only air and a bit of exhaust gasses that are recirculated pass through the intake into the cylinder. Fuel is injected directly into the cylinder itself at high pressure.
This was one of the key enablers for the 12:1 compression ratio to run on 87 octane fuel without the increased risk of pre-ignition or spark knock in a SI (spark ignition) engine.
