They lied? Misunderstood? Have you double checked under the car for yourself to be sure that you have the part that you're looking into purchasing? Exhaust is fairly simple, and easy to figure out. Really, wouldn't you rather have one than 2 cats?
What problems are you experiencing? Do you have any DTC? If so, what is the number?
