I spent a couple hours cleaning and sanding some wheels today for home refinishing, second set I have done this year.
I use 80 as the most course when touching up the rim edge rash.
I use a rubber block sandpaper holder and clean up the face of the rims, most small nicks will disappear. 80 grit, 120 grit to smooth it out. If I am going to prime and paint, I stop there until I have a coat of primer, then mild sanding with 320.
Here is a crappy cell phone pic of one of the rims I was sanding today, it had tiny little nicks all around as if it were used as a cymball, they all disappeared without taking but a tiny bit off.
