Maybe we have a semantics problem. What are you defining as cupping? The normal definition is a scalloped appearance around the inside or outside edge of a tire. The tire tread usually takes on a very lumpy but uniform (evenly spaced) appearance. Worn shocks and struts are the usual culprit when this occurs. If the edges of the tread are worn but smooth, this is an indication of bad alignment (usually too much toe). Too much toe combined with too much camber will eat the inside edges of the tire pretty quickly.
