Its not that the wheels would become weakened, but certain wheel cleaning products can acid etch the wheels and mar the finish, if you use the wrong type of cleaner and you then try to claim the wheels were damaged by other means and should be covered by warranty they won't cover it as they told you not to use acid based wheel cleaners.
