That would be entirely psychosomatic as the door opening and the seats are located in exactly the same space, its only aft of the rear seat where the difference is. The sedan appears to have more room because its longer, but its also shorter and more confined in terms of vertical height in the trunk / underneath the decklid where as with the seats up despite being shorter the hatch has much more cargo volume capacity. Putting the seats down puts the hatch far and away ahead of the sedan.
Adjust the driver or passenger seat in the front for your normal position in a sedan and in a hatch and the rear seat leg room would be identical as the only difference in space is as I said before behind the seats.
