There may be. But with the cost of a new one I don't feel it's really worth anyone's time to go through a real diagnosis if they feel the coil is kaput.
I'd just make sure the pigtail is undamaged, the capacitor thingy is not damaged, the grounds are secure. If all those check out and it still leads to a spark issue, just replace the coil.
Don't "think outside the box".
There is no box.
Do it correct, or do it twice.
