For the Focus, I find the rear defroster plus a little Rain-X works pretty darn well at maintaining rear visibility while driving. The auto-sweep function served nothing but to anger me after driving home in the rain with the wipers on, only to have the rear wiper sweep when reversing into my parking spot, dragging all the freshly-accumulated grit and dirt across the rear glass exactly when I didn't want it to.
Besides, if I'm going to clear the front window of snow and ice, why wouldn't I manually clear all the windows of snow and ice?

You never use it, ok sure. I use mine a lot more than that. It seems to work well so far. I never said you wouldn't clear all the windows of snow and ice first, just that if you'd have cleared them first that you wouldn't have run into the issue of burning up the motor/ hearing a cringe inducing grinding noise as the wiper is being torn from the ice while backing up. Thas also what the little defroster pad is for directly below the rear wiper.
Just a thought, you're of course free to do what you wish with the car as it belongs to you.
