I share your philosophy for the most part, except I don't hate buying gas. Since food and gas are a necessity for my quality of life, I just accept it and don't spend any time thinking about it.
I won't own a vehicle that isn't fun to drive, and I drive for enjoyment as much as for necessity. For this reason, I don't use A/C unless it's above 90-95 degrees, unless I'm running on the highway. I also stick to two-lane state highways as much as I can around here, as they're all hilly and twisty.
I've decided that I will run 87-89 for the most part, except when A/C is in demand for stop-and-go driving. Then I will switch to 89-93 octane. The car gets great gas mileage regardless, so efficiency is not even a consideration for me.
