If you have to wait 10000 miles do this:
Get a decent synthetic oil and a good filter. Change it, run it 5000 miles and change the filter again and add whatever you need to top it off, and then run another 5000 miles. That will extend your oil, and give you some piece of mind. That filter is essential to any oil service plan.

Background - I lost my job last month. Currently my 2012 Focus has ~2800 miles. I expected to hit 5,000 miles in August (6 months after I bought my car). Now, I probably won't hit 5,000 miles until I get another job which may be a year or more given the state of the economy.
So, can I wait until I hit 5,000 miles (however long it takes) for the first oil change, or change my oil in August (6 months after buying my focus), or change my oil in February 2013 (one year after buying my focus if I do not hit 5,000 miles)? I plan to do "The Works".
