New behaviour to report. Last night I got an actual error message, but before I had time to read it the system rebooted spontaneously. The few words I caught from the error message said something about the media type. After restarting it came up in a state similar to that following a master reset (phone unpaired, radio presets cleared, etc.). Once it finished indexing my iPod I tried issuing a few commands and they actually worked. No album art showed on the screen, but for the first time since my dealer graced me with this giant bag of crap I can actually choose something from my iPod.
It's still ugly as a mud-rail fence, and my favourites buttons on the steering wheel are still useless, and I have less than zero confidence it will continue to work, and I haven't yet mustered the courage to try streaming via Bluetooth. Hooray for customer satisfaction!
