After three visits and finally getting the tail lamp adjusted so it's not tight against the body, I finally pulled the housing off yesterday to take a look at the paint. As was mentioned by others in this thread, it's really easy and is actually the way that you replace burnt out bulbs, and the directions are in the manual. This is what I found:

As you can see, the one chip is pretty large, and there's scratching towards the bottom. I also didn't realize that the housing also chipped some paint off at the very top of the fixture, near where the tail lamp meets the hatch window--the dealer touched this up pretty well, so you may need to look closely:

Anyway, I'm glad the mystery of how to get the tail lamp housing to not rub against the body seems to be solved, but I'm a bit concerned about potential corrosion issues down the road.
