I've read that article in the past, and I just read it again. There is nothing in that article that supports gtp2focus's claim that fuel detergent additives "keep carbon deposits away from your valves" in DI engines.
Granted, it does state that some engine manufacturers have found ways to reduce or eliminate valve deposits, but none of the methods mentioned relates to the cleaning of valves from fuel additives.
The methods mentioned are:
improved components such as high-pressure solenoid injectors
optimization strategy with valve events
redesign of EGR systems to reduce particulates
redesign of PCV systems to reduce particulates
